Clos d'Opleeuw @ The Fat Duck ?

Vlaanderen produceert enkele goede wijnen. Nu, er is goed en er is groot. Het laatste wordt gezegd van de Chardonnay van Clos d'Opleeuw. Door bekende chefs. Door een beroemde Master of Wine. En door de paar gelukzakken die enkele van de 3000 jaarlijks geproduceerde flessen kunnen kopen.

Heston Blumenthal - ja, die van The Fat Duck - deed een gastoptreden in de Vlaamse realityshow Mijn Restaurant.

In de marge daarvan belde hij wijnmaker Peter Colemont: of hij twee flessen kon leveren. Colemont was zelf in Bourgogne, maar stuurde dadelijk twee man en twee flessen.

Heston Blumenthal dronk de eerste fles en nam de tweede mee.

Stiekem hoop ik dat hij ze niet lekker vindt (ja, dat zal wel...) Want het is al lastig genoeg om aan een paar flessen Clos d'Opleeuw te geraken.

Flanders produces some great wines. But there is great and there is superb. The latter has been said about the Chardonnay from Clos d'Opleeuw. By famous chefs. By a famous Master of Wine. And by the lucky few who get to buy some of the 3000 bottles produced annually.

Heston Blumenthal - yes him, the Fat Duck's own - featured as a guest in a Flemish reality show called My Restaurant. He called wine maker Peter Colemont and asked him for two bottles to be delivered. Colemont was in Burgundy at the time, but sent two people and two bottles right away.

Heston Blumenthal drank one bottle and took the second with him.

I secretly hope that he doesn't like the wine (fat chance I have on that one). Clos d'Opleeuw is enough hard to get as it is.

Vanmorgen heeft onze kleine wijnliefhebbersgemeenschap de kaap van de 100 (enkelvoudige) leden overschreden. Via LinkedIn zijn er 72 personen aangesloten, via Plaxo 16 en via Facebook 24. Enkele multi-platform-netwerkers zijn via de drie kanalen aangesloten. Die 112 aansluitingen staan voor 101 personen.

Enthousiasteling nummer 100 is Richard Randall, auteur van een heel interessante wijnblog: The Wine Connoisseur. Bij mij staat die blog alvast tussen mijn bookmarks.
Op 101, als voortrekker van het tweede honderdtal, begroeten wij Jeffry Gordon uit Nashville, Tennessee.

As of this morning our modest wine enthusiasts community has passed the cape of 100 (single) members. 72 people have joined us through LinkedIn, 16 through Plaxo and 24 through Facebook. Some multi platform networkers have joined through all three channels. Those 112 affiliations come down to 101 people.

Belgian Wines Fair

Wie nieuwsgierig is naar de evolutie van de Belgische wijnbouw, die moet maar eens naar de tweede editie van de Belgian Wines Fair.

BelgianWines.com is wijnhandelaar, maar ook een beetje missionaris in eigen land en organiseert dit evenement, enkel voor Belgische kwaliteitswijnen.

Deze tweede editie zal doorgaan op 25 april in het prestigieuze kader van Hof Ten Steen in Orsmaal. Er zullen 13 verschillende domeinen aanwezig zijn.

What? Belgian wineries? Yes. You can find out all about them at the Belgian Wines Fair, presenting only Belgian quality wines.

BelgianWines.com is a wine retailer, but also a bit of a missionary in their own country.

This second edition will be held on April 25 in the prestigious castle settings of Hof Ten Steen in Orsmaal. Thirteen wineries will participate.

De wijnblog Vinama viel onlangs in de prijzen bij de Skynetblogs Awards.
Niet de eerste keer: vorig jaar kreeg Vinama een Dutch Bloggies award...ja ja...in Nederland.

De wijnblogger was op het Feest van de Vlaamse Wijngilde, waar de Union des Grands Crus de Chablis en de Groupement des Premiers Grands Crus Classés de St-Emilion de 40ste verjaardag van de vereniging een exclusief cachet kwamen geven.

Belgian wine blog Vinama was recently awarded by the annual concours Skynetblogs.
Not for the first time: last year, about this time of year, Vinama was granted a Dutch Bloggies award...in the Netherlans that is.

The wine blogger was at the (Flemish Wine Tasters Guild) Vlaamse Wijngilde's 40th anniversary celebration, the culinary feast with an exclusive touch provided by the Union des Grands Crus de Chablis and by the Groupement des Premiers Grands Crus Classés de St-Emilion.

Vinama was probably the first to post a blog article about the celebration. Even though it's in Dutch, take a look at the article and at the pictures and wish you'd been there...

No news is good news, isn't it?
Or does it mean we're just waiting for the storm?

It is true, there is a storm of tastings events of all kinds coming.

Any debutant wine enthusiast has wild dreams about that first invitation being dropped in their mailbox. For those who receive them by the bunch, there is always that hard choice to make.

There is the worrying about missing out on interesting discoveries. About not being able to keep up with developments. About not being able to join the discussion on that one big revelation. I'm pretty sure you know the feeling.

And there is the equitability that urges us not to go to one retailer every event while neglecting others. No, it is not about showing our faces, no one cares about that. It is about showing genuine interest and buying some bottles from time to time. That is, after all, what everyone is in the market for, right?

As if that is not enough, we have to watch out, permanently, making sure that our wine cellar doesn't burst out of it's joints an that our budget doesn't go down the cellar.

Life is hard for the wine enthusiast.

Of is het wachten op de storm?

De storm van degustaties, beurzen en andere evenementen komt er inderdaad weer aan.

De beginnende wijnliefhebber droomt er van om een uitnodiging in de bus te krijgen. Voor wie er elke dag ontvangt, is het altijd weer een moeilijke keuze.

Er is de ongerustheid over het missen van interessante ontdekkingen. Niet mee zijn met de ontwikkelingen, niet kunnen meepraten over die ene grote revelatie. Het gevoel is u niet onbekend.

Er is de billijkheid die wil dat je niet altijd bij dezelfde handelaars gaat en nooit bij anderen. Neen, geen kwestie van acte de presence, daar heeft iedereen lak aan. Ongeveinsde interesse en al eens wat kopen, daar doet iedereen het toch voor?

En doorheen dat alles moeten we er dan ook nog op letten dat de wijnkelder niet uit zijn voegen barst en dat het budget niet keldert.

Het leven van de wijnliefhebber is hard.

Skynet Blog Awards: no food, no wine

Grand Cru Classé - St-Emilion

Zondag 14 december 2008. Leden van de Vlaamse Wijngilde vzw die tijdig inschreven en de luttele 6 euro bijdrage betaalden, kunnen 2 jaargangen van 32 Grand Cru Classés van St-Emilion proeven. De kastelen zijn allen in persoon vertegenwoordigd. Een huzarenstukje dat doorgaat in De Lozen Boer te Lochristi. Als dat geen goed motief is om lid te worden van de Vlaamse Wijngilde !

Sunday, december 14,2008. Members of the Flemish Wine Tasters Guild who registered in time and paid the ridiculously low fare of 6 euro, will be able to taste 2 vintages of 32 Grand Cru Classé estates from St-Emilion. All of the chateaux are represented in person. This exceptional event takes place at De Lozen Boer in Lochristi, Belgium. If that's not a motif to join the Vlaamse Wijngilde !

Pesticides versus bio

Ik moet straks het decembernummer van Test Aankoop gaan halen, want de pers staat er bol van: pesticiden gevonden in 4 van 17 geteste biowijnen en in 8 van de 17 geteste andere wijnen.

Voor wie al met vooroordelen rondloopt, alleszins een extra reden om bio af te doen als kwakzalverij en bedrog.

Reden voor paniek? Of goed nieuws?

De titel had immers ook anders kunnen luiden: 50% minder pesticiden in wijn met biolabel.

Is een biolabel nog te makkelijk te krijgen? Is een biolabel niet meer dan een marketinginstrument?

Zullen we op ons wit strijdros springen en als de nieuwe Don Quichote de sproeihelikopters te lijf gaan die een halve hectare van elke aanpalende wijngaard gratis laten delen in hun vrijgevigheid?

Of concluderen we maar dat kleinschalige intensieve landbouw en grootdistributie niet echt synoniem zijn?

Want er zijn wijnbouwers die het zonder biolabel doen. "Het", dat is dan wijn maken met minimale inzet van chemische middelen, of zelfs zonder. Die vind je niet in de supermarkt, wel bij de gespecialiseerde handel.

Zit er dan gegarandeerd geen spoor van iets vies in? Het zal wel niet, maar als het nog wat minder is dan wat Test Aankoop nu aankaart...

Remind me to go and get Test Aankoop's (consumer magazine) December edition after work, since it's all over the press today: pesticides have been found in 4 out of 17 tested bio wines and in 8 out of 17 tested others.

The prejudiced will - again - find some motif to discard bio wines and bio wineries as fraud and quacks.

Is there reason to panic? Or is this good news?
The header could have been different: 50% less pesticides in wine carrying a biolabel.

Are bio labels still too easy to get? Are they nothing but just another marketing tool? Shall we mount our white horse and go battle the spray helicopters that let half an acre of every neighbouring vineyard share in their generosity?

Or shall we conclude that small scale, intensive agriculture and large scale distribution are not really synonymous? It is true, there are wineries that do it without bio label. "It" being making wine with minimal, or sometimes zero, use of chemicals. Those are not sold in supermarkets, you'll find them at specialised retailers. Are they guaranteed not to contain any trace of something filthy then? Probably not, I suppose, but if it's any less than wat the consumer magazine Test Aankoop has found...
